A 6ft E.J Riley serpentine snooker dining table in solid African mahogany, made in Dale Street, Accrington, in the 1920s. The design and workmanship are typical of Riley at that time. A solid brass rise and fall mechanism takes the table from dining height to playing height, and a four-piece solid mahogany top covers the bed for dining.
The outside dimensions are 78 by 42 inches, with an inside playing area of 69 by 33 inches. Playing height is 32½ inches and dining height 29½ inches.
The refurbishment
All outward-facing woodwork is stripped and sanded, any imperfections repaired and the table finished in the original rich dark mahogany satin finish. The bed is precision-ground one-piece ½ inch Welsh slate.
