8ft E.J Riley Mahogany Snooker Table

E.J Riley made this 8ft table in Accrington in the 1930s from solid mahogany. It came to us from a private residence in unmarked condition. The table has been sold.

Walter Lindrum, the Australian world champion billiards player, was photographed on a visit to the Riley factory machining the same leg design as this table.

The table

The bed is a three-piece 1½ inch Welsh solid slate. Overall the table measures 102½ by 56 inches, with a playing area of 92 by 45½ inches. The ideal room size is 17ft by 13ft (518 by 396cm). It weighs approximately 500kg.

The refurbishment

All the outward-facing woodwork is stripped back to the bare wood and any imperfections repaired before the complete table is re-polished back to its original rosewood mahogany, as new. It can equally be finished in a contemporary darker mahogany or any colour of your choice during the refurbishment if requested.

New natural hide pocket leathers and white cotton nets are fitted, and the cushions and bed cloth are recovered in Hainsworth Smart English wool napped cloth. Both the leathers and the nets can be stained down a shade or two to keep the table's traditional character.
