9ft Allied Billiards Sovereign

This 9ft Allied Billiards Sovereign was made in Accrington in the 1980s from solid mahogany. It came to us from a private residence, where it had been owned from new, very well looked after and little used, and the woodwork was in very good condition. The main photograph shows the actual table.

It is a very sturdy six-leg design with a five-piece 1½ inch Italian slate bed and standard solid mahogany cushions. For unobstructed play with 54 inch snooker cues, allow a room of 18ft by 13½ft.

The refurbishment

The table was stored in its component parts in our workshop awaiting refurbishment. All outward-facing woodwork is stripped to bare wood, any imperfections repaired and the complete table re-polished back to its original state. It can be finished to the factory colour shown in the main photograph or taken to a darker mahogany if preferred. Installation is by Sovereign Snooker Services, one of the country's top installers.

About the cloth

Our fitters, all time-served through Riley apprenticeships when manufacturing was based in Accrington and Padiham, recommend Hainsworth Smart for a table like this. Hainsworth Smart and Strachan 6811 are very similar and give five to seven years of hard wear; it is the cloth found in most snooker halls and clubs the world over. Strachan Tournament and Hainsworth Match last around 12 months and are what you would find on a snooker hall or club match table. Strachan Match and Hainsworth Precision, the cloths used in professional tournaments, last only a matter of weeks.
